All That Glitters

January 4, 2012

By jove! An outfit post! But, er, not a very good one. Apparently my camera remote has run out of battery so taking photos of myself with a tripod today was not easy. And I never really mentioned it here, but I bought a 50mm 1.4 lens over the summer and it’s quite difficult to focus when you’re using a tripod and remote, at least I think so. Ho-hum, I probably just need more practice.

Anyway, what I really want to share with you is this magnificent Topshop leather skirt that I was given for Christmas (thanks Mum and James!). I’m crushing on all things shiny at the moment (and I know I’m not the only one), so this skirt really is perfection in my eyes. The jumper is thrifted, the boots are also Topshop and my necklace is from We Never Sleep. If I had access to the rest of my clothes I probably wouldn’t have worn these boots but alas, everything’s up in Edinburgh and I’m back home for the holidays.

By the way, might anybody know how to remove creases from metallic leather? Bit of a long shot, I know. The back of this skirt is still quite creased because of the way it was packaged, but I’m too scared to take an iron to it!

Gorgeous outfit (although it looks incredibly cold – what’s the weather like in Scotland at the moment?). Anyway, I can’t wait for more outfit posts to come!

I’m actually down south at the moment, so it’s not too bad. Fairly mild considering it’s winter! I couldn’t find my tights otherwise I’d have worn those, but my legs are pretty resilient when it comes to the cold anyway. It was my hands that felt like they were going to drop off!

I love that skirt! A handy trick I’ve found for taking self portraits with that lens and a tripod without a remote is to set up the tripod where you want it and then stand where you want to stand holding your camera and manually focus the lens on the top of the tripod. Mark your spot, put the camera back on the tripod and then set the timer! It’s the easiest way I’ve found, although it still gets a little tricky if you want to shoot with a really wide aperture.

Yes, that’s what I had to resort to ha ha. I takes so long that way though! Having a remote has obviously made me lazy.

I saw this skirt in store and honestly didn’t think anything of it, but WOW it looks so great on you! and it’s perfect with that pale blue jumper. I never style metallic with pastels but you’ve made me think twice. Lovely!

Maybe you can try putting a towel on top of it, I don’t know if it’ll remove the creases as good… That’s a difficult one for sure and if you are too afraid, you can always go to the drycleaner. It is however a very lovely skirt!

Such a beautiful skirt, much nicer than all of the sequinned skirts that have popped up in the last month!

What a fantastic skirt, I very much like how you paired it with a sweater with such a soft texture!
For the creases in the leather, here’s what I’ve found: http://www.ehow.com/how_4449375_remove-creases-leather.html . No need to read it haha, it only says to iron it on low with cotton between the iron and the leather. It probably works, (I have yet to try it on one of my skirts, I’ll let you know how it went if you’d like!) but I’m not sure if it is appropriate for leather with a shiny finish. Perhaps hanging the skirt on a clip hanger with weights down the hem, like clothing clips (with fabric between the clip and the skirt as to not mark it even more) would work?
Happy new year, and good luck! x

What a dashing color combination! You have magnificent taste, my dear. I adore that skirt. It reminds me of a similar one I owned in high school, but mine was in silver. If I wasn’t such a cheapskate, I’d pop on over to the Topshop website & buy that skirt.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who is struggling with their tripod and 50 mm lens :p

Beautiful skirt!

I love that skirt. I too am liking shiny, metallic-y pieces as of lately which is odd because I tend to stick to neutral earthy tones.

What a sweet outfit! To get the wrinkles out, try hanging the skirt up in the bathroom. When you have a shower, the steam should hopefully help the creases to decrease.

I frogmarched my boyfriend to Topshop to buy me the very same boots a couple of months ago – they remind me of Alison Mosshart’s (and I’m completely in love with her at the moment), so it’s lovely to see them style in such a different way.. aren’t they also just the comfiest things with heels?
